Places to go and people to see

Sand City

Where can you see the Pope on a Vespa, the Queen drinking tea, and a four-meter-tall Ronaldo?

Sand City, based near Lagoa, is the largest sand sculpture venue in the world. There’s more than 100-sculptures, built by artists from all over the world.

The sculptures can stay in place for up to two years.  The signs accompanying them are helpful and informative, giving the place an educational aspect.

It’s great for a 2-hour type visit and something young children, especially, will enjoy.

The Costume Museum in São Brás de Alportel

It's one of the most captivating museums in Portugal. In fact, to call it a ‘costume museum’ somehow understates the nature of the venue.

It houses an extraordinary range of artifacts, including examples of how the local population dressed throughout the centuries and also gain an insight to the factors influencing those changes, including invasion by foreign forces, migration, war, farming, film and tourism.

It is very much a community museum, hosting a photography group and choir, and it all serves as a concert venue.
